Pardon me while I insert my personal thoughts on fuckyeahGIS, if you agree or disagree, please reblog or comment. The topic at hand this week in the map world is Apple’s public release of their IOS map application. I’ve had a few chances to use it over the last few days, and while it’s not perfect by any means, i do believe it’s a great start. What i could do without is Google and many other tech sites using this as their opportunity to destroy Apple in the media/internet for the lackluster product. There seems to be a countless number of articles pointing out places all over the world where there are data issues. We all know, ok, there will always be data issues. I can remember back to 2003/2004 when Google first introduced its maps. It was abysmal. But now, 10 years later, probably billions of dollars, and countless hours of actual HUMANS fixing errors Google is at the pinnacle of mapping. So, Apple told Google to stick it and decided to enter the mapping business 10 years too late. They chose to compete with the top-dog, right out of the gate, and accomplished a ton of cool functionality. But, as we all know your map application is useless if the data behind it is bad. In this case, they went with 2nd tier providers probably not the best choice, but the app is out, and i believe it’s a great start into the fold. Where is the hate for the recently released Amazon Maps? Nokia Maps? Bing? Yahoo? Open Street Map? Esri? Thoughts???

There will never be a perfect map. Give Apple some time to work on theirs. That being said, I think Nokia/Navteq maps are underrated.

In MS and LA,there are buisnesses in google maps that haven’t existed since Katrina. They even have new google+ entries. Pot calling kettle.

One thing I love about the new iOS maps is the 3D satellite mode. It’s breathtaking. One disappointment: few rail lines or transit info

If fanboys shout loudest about how great Apple products are, they have to accept the loudest criticism when it comes! Haven’t tried the app
