Detail from Nova et Exacta Delineatio Americae Partis Australis, a map of South America and the Caribbean created by Flemish cartographer Levinus Hulsius ca. 1602. The notation on the far right of the image, “Guanahani 1492”, indicates the island where Christopher Columbus’ ships first landed upon arriving in the Americas, although that island is now believed to be in the Bahamas, in a different part of the Caribbean.
